Air Force Tattoo Regulations

The Air Force has one of the more lenient tattoo policies of any of the service branches. At one time, there was a 25% coverage rule, but that has been eliminated.


Here are the current rules:


• No tattoos on the neck, face, head, tongue, lips, scalp, or hands


• One single-band ring on one finger of one hand is allowed


• No content anywhere that promotes gangs, racism, extremism, supremacy organizations or that advocates for sexual, racial, ethnic, or religious discrimination

Army Tattoo Regulations

The Army does allow tattoos but only within certain perameters. Here are the rules about tattoo locations and imagery:



• No tattoos above the t-shirt line
• Tattoos must be two inches above or one inch below the elbow
• Tattoos must be two inches above or below the knees
• No tattoos on the wrists or hands
• Absolutely no extremist, indecent, sexist, or racist tattoos


Marine Tattoo Regulations

The Marines do allow tattoos, provided they fall within certain regulations. Officers are limited to no more than four visible tattoos in their standard PT uniform. Additionally, tattoos cannot be wider than three inches or the width of the Marine’s four fingers, whichever is greater.


Here are some more Marine tattoo regulations:


• No tattoos above the collar bone

• Arm tattoos must be two inches above and one inch below the elbow

• Tattoos must be two inches above or below the knees

• No hand/wrist tattoos except for one 3/8 inch tattoo only on one finger

• Note: All Marines may have unlimited tattoos on their torso (within the above limits) as long as they are covered by a properly fitting PT uniform

• No offensive, discriminatory, or sexist imagery

Navy Tattoo Regulations

The Navy tattoo regulations are perhaps the least restrictive. No racist, sexist, discriminatory, extremist, or indecent imagery or messaging is allowed. In addition, the following regulations must be followed:


• No hand/wrist

• No tattoos on the head or face, but one tattoo is allowed on the neck (one-inch maximum)

• There are no restrictions on arm or leg tattoos

  • What Should I Do To Prepare For My Appointment?

    Prior to attending an appointment for laser tattoo removal, it is important that patients protect their skin from sun exposure; this means wearing sunscreen with SPF 50+ anytime you plan on being outdoors (even if just walking from one place to another) and avoiding tanning beds altogether until after all treatments have been completed successfully (you do not want any additional pigment introduced into an area undergoing active laser treatment). Additionally, patients should avoid taking any blood thinners (e..g aspirin) prior to their appointments because these medications can increase risk associated with certain types of energy based procedures like lasers (though always check with certified laser technician first if unsure).
